Founded on May 1st, 1875, the campus of Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) is nestled in the hills of Huntsville, AL. The 800+ acre campus sits in its own jurisdiction known as Normal, AL, which we Normalites affectionately call "The Hill".

A former slave, by the name of William Hooper-Councill, founded the school (originally known as Huntsville Normal School) with an appropriation of $1,000 per year, 61 students, and two teachers. Councill's dream for furthering the education of black people in the same place that he was sold into slavery has since grown into a bustling breathing ground for Black Excellence, serving 7,000+ students, 4 colleges, millions of dollars in research, and several championship winning Division I-AA athletic programs.
